First of all, to leave your campsite without a backpack is not safe at all. I know this was two guys not thinking this type of thing would happen to them, but who thinks they are not coming home and are going to die that day? If you are going camping you need to know the weather and have some idea on how to get back. And if you have problems remembering how to get back get a GPS devise.
For all the hikers out there, take your friends for the first time or two to a place they can't get lost. Have the lead the way back. Make them show you they know how to apply all the tips you showed them. And if you are not sharing you're not caring about their survival.
It is very unfortunate these people died. Mr. Smith had to go through the night with temperatures below freezing. The moon was not lighting up the sky and the trails are steep. It was not a good situation from the start.
So, as a hiker or camper, you should know your limits. Be real and go to places the friends and family are safe but can still have fun. If you are planning a more experienced trip, take a group of people. Invest in technology so your ___ will make it back. I love the outdoors and I want to enjoy it as much as possible and I do understand about the adventure. But again be real.
